Cameo with Saint Nicholas

Byzantine or Italian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 303

This glass paste imitation cameo is of Saint Nicholas of Myra, who wears clerical dress identifying him as a bishop.

Expensive cameo and semiprecious hard stone carvings for personal devotion were so highly prized that imitations in glass paste were produced for the general populace in Byzantium and abroad.
