Chalice

Syrian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 300

The high foot and large cup of this elegant work are typical features of chalices used in the early church for the distribution of consecrated wine during the Divine Liturgy (Eucharist). The inscription records a family’s hope for salvation in the afterlife.
