Chariot Mount with Three Figures

Late Roman or Byzantine

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 301

The men who adorn this chariot mount are probably two orators and a grammarian, as suggested by their gestures and by the scrolls and writing tablets they hold. The piece may have been used to decorate the chariot of a distinguished orator in Gaul.
