Summer Kimono with Pattern of Autumn Grasses

Japan

Taishō period (1912–26)

Not on view

The skillful treatment of graduated shading (bokashi) on this summer kimono captures the quality of moonlight over a field of susuki and Chinese bellflowers, two of the autumn grasses. It was made for a young woman in the Kyoto area before her wedding in 1922.
