Transverse Flute

Boehm & Mendler, German German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 684

The functionality and sound of the flute was revolutionized by Theobald Boehm’s acoustically correct system for bore profile, tone holes, and key mechanism. This resulted in improved intonation and a louder, more consistent tone. His 1847 system, seen here, is essentially the modern flute.
