Viola

Benjamin Banks British

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

This viola, by one of the finest English makers of the late eighteenth century, is in unaltered condition. Its body size is small, both in comparison with seventeenth-century violas and those preferred by modern players. The neck construction represents a transitional stage between traditional and modern styles.

#Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14 by Sergei Racmaninoff, originally for voice, arranged for viola by David Aaron Carpenter. Performed by David Aaron Carpenter and Gabriela Martinez, piano, 2012.
