Bass Recorder

Johann Schell German

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 684

The bass recorder, although seldom played on its own, provided important harmonic and rhythmic support to the recorder consorts popular during the Baroque period. This is one of four surviving bass recorders by Schell, one of the most respected Nuremberg recorder makers of his generation.
