Jeremy Bentham
Pierre-Jean David d'Angers (French, 1788–1856)
Modeled ca. 1830; cast by Richard Eck et Durand before 1844
Bronze; Diam. 6 3/4 in. (17.1 cm)
Gift of Joseph G. Reinis, 2000 (2000.455.2)

Description

The French Romantic sculptor David d'Angers was as fascinated by phrenology as Dantan was (see Dantan), but he disdained caricature. He modeled 454 identifiable portrait medallions, all with a sweeping earnestness in keeping with their subjects' greatness. They recall a period in Europe remarkable for its internationalism, including, as they do, spirits as diverse as Goethe, James Fenimore Cooper, and here the venerable English jurist and philosopher Jeremy Bentham (1748–1832), who was much admired in France. The donor is the author of the standard work The Portrait Medallions of David d'Angers (New York, 1999).
