Boy with Pull Toy, ca. 1825
Miss Leland (American)
Watercolor on ivory; 4 1/4 x 4 in. (10.8 x 10.2 cm)
Purchase, Martha Fleischman Gift, in honor of her mother, Barbara G. Fleischman, 2000 (2000.484)

Description

The Museum's collection of American portrait miniatures has become increasingly comprehensive with the addition of fine works by heretofore unknown miniaturists, such as this enchanting portrait of a beautifully dressed boy with his pull-toy horse. The obscure but obviously talented Miss Leland signed and dated the work on the original backing paper for the ivory, and it may be that this inscribed example will lead to the discovery of other pieces by the artist. All too often, miniatures of children served a memorial function, but this piece, by contrast, appears to be a life-affirming image.
