This gallery presents an array of forms of expression that developed following the adoption of Christianity as a state religion by the emperor of Aksum, Ezana, in the fourth century.
In Ethiopia, monasteries were historically important centers of learning, where devotional art such as illuminated manuscripts, icons, and processional crosses were created by monks for their patrons: abbots, nobles, and emperors. The examples on view include cast-brass and wood-inlaid processional crosses from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, an illuminated Gospel from the same period, and an eighteenth-century painted icon.
