The amazing range of materials crafted in China from the tenth to the twentieth century is presented in the four Florence and Herbert Irving Galleries for Chinese Decorative Arts (Gallery 219 through Gallery 222). One room showcases small treasures in various materials; another features textiles. The manipulation of natural materials such as lacquer, bamboo, or ivory is explored in the third room, while metalwork and jade are presented in the fourth.
Due to their fragility and sensitivity to light, textiles and lacquers rotate regularly. In addition, small exhibitions exploring specific materials or important themes in China's vibrant decorative arts tradition are also occasionally shown in these galleries.
