The Sackler Wing Galleries (Gallery 223 through Gallery 231) present thematic exhibitions of Japanese art on a rotating basis. Installations of painting, sculpture, and decorative arts change twice annually, while especially light-sensitive works such as prints and textiles rotate four times per year. An ensemble of Buddhist sculptures is on permanent view, as is a stone fountain crafted and installed by Isamu Noguchi.
A reading room (Gallery 232) at the end of the galleries, with furniture created by George Nakashima, features occasional demonstrations of Japanese flower arranging and tea ceremony, as well as films and books on Japanese art and culture.
