Square or rectangular in shape and surrounded by covered passageways, a cloister is the nucleus of monastic life: an open-air courtyard with proximity to spaces that serve the essential needs of the community—chapter house, dormitory, refectory, church.
Reconstructed with fragments from the twelfth-century cloister of the Benedictine monastery of St-Michel-de-Cuxa (or, in Catalan, San Miguel de Cuixà) near the Pyrenees, a lush garden crisscrossed by stone walkways is complemented by the cloister's distinct pink Languedoc marble, creating an inviting and tranquil space for contemplation.
