Works of art in precious materials on view in this gallery and in Gallery 013 convey the luxury and artistic sophistication of medieval artists and patrons.
Finely painted manuscripts range from works made for a Spanish monastery to a prayer book for French queens and princes. Ivory carvings include book covers carved in the time of Charlemagne, a box made at the court of the Muslim caliph at Cordoba, and a mirror back made for Parisian nobility. Goldsmiths' work includes enamels from Limoges and elsewhere, and jewelry from the eleventh through fifteenth century. From a princely collection comes a costly and rare enameled beaker that humorously depicts mischievous apes as they rob a sleeping peddler of his money and his clothes.
