The objects in this gallery primarily originate from temple equipment dating to the so-called Third Intermediate Period (ca. 1070–712 B.C.) and the Kushite Period (712–664 B.C.), a time when Egypt was politically weak but the arts were of high quality. In the absence of strong kings, temples became the main places for which artworks were created. When kings from Upper Nubia (Kush), in today's Sudan, conquered Egypt, they and their officials demanded a new vitality in the art that represented them.
