Of Greek origin, El Greco trained in Italy and spent most of his life in Toledo, where he developed his unique style. In addition to religious scenes and portraits, he painted a few visionary landscapes, of which View of Toledo is the most famous. The Metropolitan Museum's collection of El Greco's work is the finest outside Spain. His canvases had an enormous impact on twentieth-century painters, from Pablo Picasso to Jackson Pollock. By the time El Greco died, in 1614, his ecstatic style had been replaced by a new realism, as seen in the work of Francisco de Zurbarán, Jusepe de Ribera, and the young Diego Velázquez.
