The Evelyn Borchard Metzger Gallery houses works by Rembrandt van Rijn and Frans Hals, the two most important artists to work during the 1600s in the neighboring cities of Amsterdam and Haarlem, respectively. Paintings by both artists were also highly prized by the Gilded Age collectors of America; all the works in this gallery (including superb landscapes by Ruisdael, Hobbema, and Cuyp) were purchased by the department store pioneer Benjamin Altman between 1905 and his death in 1913, when they were bequeathed to the Museum.
Note: This gallery is temporarily closed to the public due to a construction project. Visitors to the Museum may inquire at the Information Desk in the Great Hall for more information.
