Rembrandt van Rijn and Frans Hals specialized in portraiture, Hals almost exclusively from the late 1620s on; earlier, he had also painted genre subjects in his hometown of Haarlem. During the same decade, the Leiden native Rembrandt concentrated on religious and mythological scenes, which, like his later treatments of such themes, are remarkable for their rethinking of traditional subjects in human terms. Man in Oriental Costume of 1632 is among the pictures that announced Rembrandt's arrival in the great port of Amsterdam, where he quickly established himself as a preeminent painter, draftsman, etcher, and teacher. Aristotle with a Bust of Homer was commissioned by a Sicilian nobleman in 1653 and is one of the artist's most celebrated works. Paintings by Rembrandt and Hals are also displayed in the Altman Collection (Gallery 634). The Metropolitan Museum has the most extensive holdings of both artists' work outside Europe.
