At the dawn of the sixteenth century, Antwerp eclipsed Bruges in economic prestige and power. In response to the newfound wealth of the upper middle class, artists increasingly worked for the open market as well as for aristocratic and ecclestiastical patrons, organizing their workshops to accommodate growing demand. Painters began to specialize in different genres and sometimes collaborated on compositions, with one artist supplying the landscape and another the figures. While Adriaen Isenbrandt stayed on in waning Bruges, Joos van Cleve and Quentin Metsys heralded the prominence of Antwerp, and Bernard van Orley made his career as a painter and tapestry designer in Brussels.
