In the fifteenth century, Bruges was an economic hub of western Europe and the favored residence of the dukes of Burgundy. The concentration of wealth, power, and prestige in Bruges attracted immigrant painters, including Hans Memling, from Seligenstadt, near Frankfurt, Germany, and Gerard David, from Oudewater, near Gouda, Holland. In this gallery, the style of these masters and their workshops can be compared to that of painters who remained farther north, such as Hieronymus Bosch in s'Hertogenbosch and Cornelis Engebrechtsz in Leiden. Works by Netherlandish artists were in great demand in Italy and Spain. Some painters—such as Juan de Flandes, who was enticed to work for Queen Isabella the Catholic in Burgos, Spain—left Flanders and eventually adapted to prevailing local style.
