Beginning with Jan van Eyck in the fifteenth century, landscape played an important role in the painting of the Burgundian- Habsburg Netherlands. It was not until about 1515, however, when Joachim Patinir focused his creative energies on panoramic views, rocky vistas, and expansive horizons, that the genre came into its own. Pieter Bruegel the Elder further revolutionized Patinir's vision by producing a brilliantly integrated and harmonious secular universe, where the religious pretext for landscape was all but abandoned. His landscapes are imbued with a new humanism, at once idyllic and vernacular—setting the stage for the development of seventeenth-century Flemish and Dutch landscape painting.
