The first third of the sixteenth century produced some of Germany's most important artists. The Metropolitan Museum owns key examples by Albrecht Dürer, Hans Baldung Grien, Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Hans Holbein the Younger. Having absorbed the realism of early Netherlandish painting and the culture of Italian classicism and humanism, German painting was subsequently transformed by the religious reforms of Martin Luther (1483–1546). Styles varied from region to region. Among the key patrons were the dukes of Saxony and the powerful bishops of the Catholic Church. Commissions from the merchant class led to some of the greatest portraits ever produced, especially those by Holbein, who also worked in England at the court of Henry VIII (ruled 1509–47).
