Artistic production in Europe during the first half of the nineteenth century was dominated by the conflict between two aesthetic movements, Neoclassicism and Romanticism.
This gallery features works by the artists generally regarded as the most prominent representatives: J. A. D. Ingres and his students Chassériau and Lehmann; and Eugène Delacroix and his master, Théodore Gericault. Ingres's works were said to elevate the prominence of line over color, exemplified by his Odalisque in Grisaille and the two portraits of M. and Mme. Leblanc. Delacroix's works promoted the expressive use of color and furious, Baroque-style compositions.
