After the French national collections in Paris, the Metropolitan owns the largest group of paintings by Camille Corot—the most protean and poetic landscapist of nineteenth-century France—many of which are displayed in the Janice H. Levin Gallery. His late views of Ville d'Avray veiled in silvery mists are universally admired, but only at the Met can one also see the limpid Italian landscapes of his youth, the grand history paintings of his maturity, and the many fine figure paintings that he made in the last decade of his life.
