In 1798 Napoleon conquered Egypt, which had been a province of the Ottoman Empire since 1517. Although he was driven out by the British after one year, his campaign unleashed in Europe a profound curiosity for the Orient and for Islamic culture, which was immediately made manifest in European painting.
Throughout the nineteenth century, artists crossed the straits of Gibraltar and roamed as far as Syria and Turkey in search of picturesque motifs and exotic landscapes. This gallery displays works by several generations of artists, from David's student Girodet, to Ingres's student Chassériau, to one of the last Neoclassical painters, J. L. Gérôme.
