This gallery features small-scale works, largely painted on paper rather than on canvas, that attest to the proliferation of plein-air painting in the early nineteenth century, especially among French artists working in Italy. Oil sketching out-of-doors tended to be preparatory to more finished studio compositions and eventually led to the successive innovations of the Romantics, Realists, and Impressionists.
This gallery is one of ten that comprise the Henry J. Heinz II Galleries.
