This gallery features works by French and other Northern artists who were active in Italy in the first half of the nineteenth century, either as official members of arts academies or as part of the more informal community of artists, known as the école de Rome. The selection ranges from topographical sketches and idealized landscapes to academic figure studies and genre scenes that illustrate religious subjects, local costumes, and brigands.
This gallery is one of ten that comprise the Henry J. Heinz II Galleries.
