This gallery, hung with paintings from the peak of Courbet's career in the 1850s and 1860s, highlights the artist's versatility and invention as a portraitist. From his portrayal of the dashing tenor Louis Gueymard to his depiction of the demure Madame Auguste Cuoq, Courbet captured the personalities of his sitters with inimitable directness.
