At the start of his career, Courbet provoked a series of scandals with politically and aesthetically inflammatory paintings of everyday life. This gallery focuses on two principal themes that subsequently occupied the artist in the late 1850s and 1860s: hunting, as dramatized in After the Hunt, and sensual female nudes ranging from the famous Woman with a Parrot to Woman in the Waves. Courbet remained a controversial figure, but not at the expense of popular and commercial success.
Additional paintings by Courbet are on view in Gallery 809 and Gallery 812.
