The Metropolitan is fortunate to have a large collection of works by Gustave Courbet, one of the most provocative and controversial painters of the nineteenth century. This gallery features several key landscapes and seascapes by Courbet, as well as related works by his contemporary, Charles-François Daubigny. One of Courbet's earliest masterpieces, The Young Ladies of the Village, appears along with Rosa Bonheur's equally ambitious The Horse Fair of roughly the same date.
Gallery 809 and Gallery 811 are also dedicated to Courbet's works.
This gallery is one of ten that comprise the Henry J. Heinz II Galleries.
