Four galleries (Gallery 814–817) feature the Museum's collection of works by Degas, one of the world's largest and most comprehensive.
Edgar Degas made sculptures throughout his long career, always working in wax. On display in this room are bronzes cast after some of his small-scale wax figures.
The subjects largely coincide with the themes of his most popular paintings and pastels: dancers, bathers, and racehorses. Only one of Degas's sculptures was shown during his lifetime: the nearly lifesize Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (on view in Gallery 815). The other wax models were discovered in his studio after his death.
The Metropolitan's patron Louisine W. Havemeyer paid for bronzes to be cast of nearly half of the pieces and gave the Museum the first set ("A").
