Four galleries (Gallery 814–817) feature the Museum's collection of works by Degas, one of the world's largest and most comprehensive.
The richness of these holdings is due in large part to Mrs. Louisine Havemeyer, one of the principal collectors of modern European art in America at the turn of the twentieth century. She began acquiring Degas's work in the late 1870s at the urging of her friend, Mary Cassatt, the famous American Impressionist, and came to prefer his work above all other living artists.
By the time of her death, Mrs. Havemeyer had amassed a collection of more than sixty paintings, drawings, and pastels by Degas, as well as all seventy bronzes and a large number of prints. The bulk of her collection—the most complete group of Degas's works ever assembled—entered the Metropolitan upon Mrs. Havemeyer's death in 1929. This gallery also includes small-scale works by Tissot and other artists in Degas's circle.
