During the last forty years of his long career, Monet often depicted the same subject a number of times under various weather and lighting conditions.
These "series paintings," several of which are represented by works on view in this gallery, are celebrated for their uncompromising naturalism yet they are actually among Monet's most intensely subjective works. In general, he began the series paintings out-of-doors but completed them in the quiet of his studio where he focused on the purely formal and decorative aspects of his compositions. The extensive gardens he cultivated on his property in Giverny became the principal subject for his late works.
Key early works by Monet are on view in Gallery 818.
This gallery is one of nine that comprise The Annenberg Galleries.
