Among the most influential and experimental of the Impressionist artists, Camille Pissarro emerged in the 1860s as a specialist in broadly painted landscapes in the tradition of Courbet and Monet.
In the late 1880s and early 1890s, Pissarro explored the virtues of the newly minted divisionist (or pointillist) technique, often for heroic representations of peasants. At the end of his career, the artist returned to his Impressionist roots, producing a series of market scenes and cityscapes that evoke the looser, more spontaneous style of his youth.
