Claude d'Urfé, royal French ambassador to the Council of Trent, commissioned this remarkable carved and inlaid embellishment for the chapel of the Château de la Bastie d'Urfé near Lyons. The 1548 altarpiece representing the Last Supper was designed by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola (1507–1573) and made by Fra Damiano da Bergamo in Italy and shipped to France. The intarsia panels show architectural views, still lifes, and ornamental patterns. The patron's cipher is displayed next to the Eucharistic sacrificial lamb, adopted as an emblem by d'Urfé. The stained-glass windows displayed here by Valentin Bousch (active 1514–1541) in Metz in 1531 are astonishing for the lifelike features and the contrast of exquisite landscape details with dramatic dynamism.
