In the 1760s, the Earl of Coventry commissioned this truly international room, part of the Annie Laurie Aitken Galleries, for his country estate, with furniture made in England and upholstery made in France. Woven at the Parisian Manufacture Royale des Gobelins, the tapestries imitate brocaded paneling hung with medallions illustrating Allegories of the Elements designed by François Boucher. Matching tapestry panels cover almost every surface, from sofas and chairs to spaces between windows and over doors; retaining most of its original furniture, this is the Museum's most complete historical room. Its plasterwork ceiling, designed by Robert Adam, is here complemented by a splendid Adams-designed carpet, probably woven at Axminster.
