The contents of the Josephine Bay Paul Gallery illustrate the primacy and vivacity of modeling in the art of sculpture during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Models, especially those rapidly formed from pellets of clay, can retain the dash and immediacy that are sometimes lacking from the final results in stone or metal. Two of the ablest French Neoclassical modelers, Augustin Pajou and Claude Michel, known as Clodion, are well shown, particularly the latter, with his audacious proposal of a monument to commemorate the first launching of a hot-air balloon, in the center of the gallery. Appealing models by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse represent the second half of the nineteenth century.
