This dining room, the only complete French Art Nouveau interior in an American museum, comes from the Paris apartment of Auguste Rateau, an engineer and art connoisseur. It was created by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer, a ceramist who, about 1895, turned his hand to painting and decorating.
Wisteria symbolizes welcome, and Lévy-Dhurmer incorporated the motif throughout the room: pointillist-style murals depict birds in wisteria-laden landscapes; walnut-veneered paneling is inlaid with purplish amaranth representing clusters of blossoms; further clusters are carved on the furniture and stamped on the leather upholstery; the bronze-and-alabaster standing lamps evoke the trunks of wisteria vines. The outer gallery features a selection of works by Redon and other artists.
