Works by the primary Surrealist artists are displayed in the Pierre and Maria-Gaetana Matisse Gallery, from precisionist paintings by Magritte, Ernst, and Dalí to more allusive pictures by Miró and by Leonora Carrington.
In 2002 the Museum received the personal collection of the art dealer Pierre Matisse and his wife Maria-Gaetana, comprising some 150 works in all media. The collection is especially rich in the works of Matisse's father, as well as the artists whom he represented, such as Miró, Tanguy, and Balthus.
