A suite of three galleries (Gallery 923–925) is devoted primarily to the work of American artists who came to international attention in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Various approaches to abstraction are introduced in the hard-edge forms of Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, and Donald Judd. Cy Twombly's vigorous graphic script and Robert Rauschenberg's multimedia Combines offer a new generation's response to Abstract Expressionism.
Key examples of early pop art include Andy Warhol's silkscreen painting of Jackie Kennedy and a soft sculpture by Claes Oldenburg, while pop masters Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist are represented by later works.
