The Howard Gilman Gallery presents special, focused exhibitions of photographs, most often from the first century of the medium (1840–1940) and from the permanent collection. Occasionally, the gallery displays later twentieth-century or small-scale contemporary photographs or works loaned by other public or private collections.

Exhibitions generally change every three to four months. The gallery also sometimes serves as the final section of a larger exhibition presented in the adjacent galleries.
