The red velvet wall coverings in Gallery 956 date from the seventeenth or eighteenth century and were originally from the Lehman home. The gallery houses an exceptional collection of Sienese paintings, which, when considered along with the holdings in the Department of European Paintings, constitutes the finest of its kind outside of Siena.
Well represented are Sano di Pietro and Giovanni di Paolo, two leading Sienese painters of the fifteenth century. The numerous images of the Madonna and Child on view in this gallery provide the opportunity to compare how various Sienese artists rendered this holy subject, which held particular significance in Siena, where the Virgin Mary was venerated as the patron saint.
