This vast, light-filled space presents the Museum's unsurpassed collection of American monumental sculpture, architectural elements, and stained glass. It is the grand vestibule to the American Wing, which houses period rooms and galleries for American decorative arts, paintings, and sculpture.
The south end of the court houses the exotic entrance loggia designed by Louis C. Tiffany for Laurelton Hall, his country estate on Long Island. Behind and at either side of the Tiffany loggia is a pair of staircases, each two stories high, from the Chicago Stock Exchange Building designed by Louis H. Sullivan in 1893. Selections of stained-glass windows by Tiffany, Arts and Crafts metalwork by Samuel Yellin, and relief sculptures by Augustus Saint-Gaudens complement the architectural elements.
