The Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection showcases the continuum of artistic ceramics in the United States from 1876 to 1956. The earliest examples date to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, the catalyst for the emerging American art pottery movement. Ceramists absorbed styles and techniques from France and England, and from the Far East. The tradition of painted ceramics was explored in myriad ways. By the late 1890s, the Arts and Crafts movement took hold with its flat, simplified, and conventionalized nature motifs and executed mainly with matte glazes. The period saw a proliferation in glaze experiments, from the rich red of the Chinese sang de boeuf and innovative matte glazes to luster and iridescent finishes, as well as jewel-like crystalline surfaces. The 1920s through the 1950s reflected the major art movements and ultimately ushered in the era of the studio potter.
