This gallery provides an orientation to seventeenth-century American furniture, which reflected late Renaissance and Mannerist designs from northern Europe and England.
Examples demonstrate the craft practices brought to the colonies by immigrant artisans—primarily from England—and disseminated through their apprenticeship system. William and Mary–style furniture on view emphasizes verticality and is lighter in scale than its predecessors.
