This pre-Revolutionary room in The Doris and Stanley Tananbaum Galleries features the only remaining suite of New York City eighteenth-century furniture. It belonged to Samuel Verplanck (1739–1820), a member of an influential New York City family, and his Dutch-born wife, Judith Crommelin Verplanck (d. 1803). The room itself, including the fireplace wall, paneled dado, and cornice, comes from a house built in 1767 in the Hudson River valley by Cadwallader and Elizabeth Ellison Colden, descendants of another storied New York family. The Verplancks lived in an elegant Georgian-style brick town house at 3 Wall Street whose interior was probably more ornate than the relatively simple architectural setting seen here. No eighteenth-century New York City parlors have survived, however, and the Colden House setting provides a fine example of mid-eighteenth-century American woodwork.
