Intended for public assemblies and balls, this imposing room in The Doris and Stanley Tananbaum Galleries was on the second floor of the City Hotel, built in 1792 in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1798, George Washington's last birthday ball was held here, and in 1824, the marquis de Lafayette was entertained during his triumphal American visit. Originally, the room must have been furnished for dancing parties, with nothing more than straight-legged side chairs in the Windsor or early Federal style lining the walls. Today, it serves as a gallery for displaying highlights from the Museum's collection of eighteenth-century American furniture.
