The James and Margaret Carter Federal Gallery displays masterpieces of American furniture in the Federal style, which became popular following the adoption of the United States Constitution in 1788. Purity of line, geometric abstraction, slender proportions, and uncluttered surfaces are characteristics of the style. Although recognizably American in materials, construction methods, and design, the objects exhibited here were derived from contemporary English models.
