Many of the pieces on view in this parlor once belonged to the noted early twentieth-century collector Bertha King Benkard, for whom the room is named. It was originally part of a house built in Petersburg, Virginia, but prominently features furniture made in New York City by leading cabinetmakers such as Duncan Phyfe. Like the nearby Baltimore and Haverhill Rooms, the Benkard Room exemplifies the popularity in the young United States of the Neoclassical style evident in the work of the eighteenth-century British architects Robert and James Adam.
