The works on view in this gallery exemplify the style of figural carving and lavish ornamentation with costly materials—such as rosewood and mahogany veneers, marble, and gilded brass and gesso—that spread from France to the United States around the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The doorframes of this gallery were originally part of the interior of the Halsted House, erected in Rye, New York, around 1825. The walls were painted to simulate the faux ashlar masonry in the entry hall of the Alsop House in Middletown, Connecticut (built 1838–39).
